Ocean Mining
Ocean mining are hydrothermal vents that source minerals at the bottom of the ocean to make batteries for materials like cell phones, cars, etc. “Even though humans need these materials, ocean mining can endanger entire species, and can destroy entire habitats,” (Planet Home). When destroying those natural habitats, it leaves the wildlife without a place to live, wiping away sections of life. Even though mining is happening underwater, it still makes a ton of noise threatening/scaring marine animals like whales and dolphins, threatening their safety. “Wastewater containing sediment and mine tailings (or mining ‘fines’) pumped back into the ocean would also form plumes which may travel hundreds of kilometers impacting species that use bioluminescence to hunt or find mates,” (Deep Sea Conservation). In addition, stripping seamounts destroy coral ecosystems that take centuries to grow.
